Alec Ilyine (b. 1981) is a Belgian musician, sound engineer, and multi-instrumentalist, known for his exploration of diverse musical traditions. He plays a wide range of stringed instruments, including 6- and 12-string guitars, Ud, Cavaquinho, Charango, and bass guitar.
Alec holds a Master’s degree in Music for Jazz Guitar and also has a Teaching diploma. He has pursued further studies in Indian music, Flamenco and Arabic music, and a self-study of blues and contemporary fingerpicking. His live looping is influenced by ambient music and Classical minimalism, blending all these elements into both his performances and compositions.
At present Alec is using a minimal setup of acoustic steelstring guitar and iPad, using electronics and fieldrecordings to create experimental sonic landscapes and take people on a journey through fragrances of fingerpicking compositions where improvisation is key…
An experienced educator, Alec has taught acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, music theory, and band coaching at various institutions. He enjoys creating dynamic, hands-on workshops that encourage students to experiment with sound and express themselves musically.
In addition to his musical career, Alec is passionate about contemporary dance and has contributed sound design for theatre and dance performances. He is also the co-founder of Synaptic Body, an innovative art project with Lucía Callén, combining Butoh dance, cutting-edge technology, and immersive, multi-speaker sound experiences.
In 2018, Alec founded Fly Studio, a unique recording studio and concert venue in Brussels designed for recording and sonic experiments.
When he’s not making music or designing sound, Alec enjoys photography, long-distance mountain hiking, and cooking.
