Teaching

With over 20 years of experience, I have taught guitar, bass, music theory, band coaching, and general music education to students of all ages and skill levels, from young children to adults in their 60s. My teaching journey has taken me through private schools, secondary schools, and government-funded music academies, where I’ve worked with diverse musical styles and personalities— both individually and in group settings. I approach teaching as an art of improvisation. I thrive on creating personalized learning experiences based on each student’s unique needs and interests. Whether it’s designing a focused workshop or adjusting to the dynamics of a session, I find inspiration in the moment and adapt accordingly.

Some of my workshop topics include:

  • Fingerpicking Patterns: Techniques for expanding fingerpicking, including right-hand techniques from around the world and how to use open strings creatively.
  • Alternative Tunings: Exploring new tunings, creating custom scales, and moving horizontally on the neck for melodic variety. My album Ripple demonstrates this approach.
  • Sound Workshops:
Mobile Recording: Techniques for recording with mobile phones, including external mics and field recordings.
Creative Use of Apps: Exploring music apps for recording, making music, music production, and opening up new ways of study.
Free Improvisation: Exercises to expand musical possibilities and introduce instant composition.
Foley and Film Music: Creating sounds for animation, with a focus on the history of foley and live sound performance.
Listening Sessions: Analyzing music and discussing sound to improve listening skills.
Spatial Awareness: Understanding acoustics and creating sound installations using phones to record objects in space.
John Cage’s Philosophy: Making music with everyday objects.

These workshops are open to all skill levels and instruments, and can be customized to suit individual or group needs.
